High passes, turquoise lakes and moon-like valleys — Ladakh is the ultimate Indian adventure. Here is how to plan it safely.
Ladakh is a rite of passage for Indian travellers who love the mountains. Between Khardung La, Pangong Tso and the sand dunes of Nubra, it delivers landscapes unlike anywhere else in the country. But high altitude demands smart planning.
Best time to visit
June to September is the window when roads and passes are open and the weather is stable. July and August are busiest; September brings clearer skies and thinner crowds.
Which route to take
- Srinagar–Leh (via Kargil): gentler altitude gain, better for acclimatization.
- Manali–Leh: dramatic high passes but a steeper climb — ideal on the way back.
- Fly into Leh: fastest option, but rest for 24–48 hours before any excursion.

Permits you will need
Indian nationals need Inner Line Permits for Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri and the Dah-Hanu villages. These are arranged online or through your operator — carry multiple photocopies and ID.
Altitude safety
Hydrate constantly, avoid alcohol on arrival, climb gradually, and keep a day of rest in Leh. Consult your doctor about Diamox if you are prone to altitude sickness.
